A World of Different Democracies
Today I had the most enjoyable time in class with Ms Dorothy talking about the US System of Governance or simply put-the political structure of the world's most worshiped democracies. Without further ado, let me declare my interests here, I am a huge fan of politics especially multiparty politics (funny though because I don't come from such a background...) so I identified with most of the issues that were being discussed today. Three things stood out for me; the impartiality of Dorothy when discussing the pros and cons of the system-it re-enforced the principles of democracy (...and by now you know-such is rare where I come from); the inter-country experience sharing that characterized discussions thereafter and the realization that every democracy has its flaws was disappointing but eye-opening! I enjoyed learning how Panama is organized with no trace of the military-ever-none; wow! it was equally enriching to have more insight on the on-going conflict between South and North Korea but perhaps more impressive was the metaphor that was used to describe it from Indonesia; when two elephants fight usually the ants in-between die-how fitting! Just when I was getting confused how it all fitted, Qadeer -Afghanistan solved the puzzle! what more to ask for from a class of much-talented Fulbrighters?-Thanks colleagues for a wonderful class experience and of course I will be borrowing Panama's constitution to try it out back home after two years!!
